Did you know…Bureau Veritas sets the example by 'practicing what we preach'

As a global leader in Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment (QHSE) conformity management, Bureau Veritas has a reputation for excellence in guiding clients. Perhaps less known is the fact that Bureau Veritas is committed to being exemplary in its own QHSE management, from top to bottom throughout the Group.

 

In the words of Bureau Veritas chief executive Frank Piedelièvre: 'I consider that we must be exemplary in our own QHSE management. Our QHSE commitment starts with me, and cascades through the line managers who are supported by our internal QHSE Networks.'

 

Focus on Quality
Explains Yves-Arnaud Peres, the Group's chief quality officer: 'Our Quality commitment is based on the assumption that customer requirements can always be met. This client-oriented approach drives an efficient service machine which is fueled by individual skills, employee commitment and continuous improvement of both processes and training levels.'

 

Systems have long been in place to support and facilitate these dynamics – systems which are themselves subject to continuous improvement.

 

It is worth noting that since 1996, although not required, the Bureau Veritas Group has been independently certified to ISO 9001 standards for Quality practice.

 

A clear HSE policy
At Bureau Veritas, Health & Safety at work are considered the responsibility of every employee, contractor and visitor. Says Yves-Arnaud Peres: 'We can never afford to become complacent. We believe no job is worth doing if it cannot be done safely. So keeping Health & Safety awareness high is a constant concern.'

 

Bureau Veritas worldwide accident figures are being published in the Group's 2007 Annual Report (released April 2008). The information features lost time accident and severity frequency rates. Through such a transparent approach, the Group aims to raise the awareness bar and trigger even greater improvement in preventing workplace accidents.

 

Bureau Veritas is also aware of its responsibility to protect the environment and preserve natural resources. A growing number of internal programs encourage staff to take part in this ongoing effort. At an organizational level, the Group is actively promoting voluntary certification of its locations to ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems).

 

Constant improvement to benefit clients
For any organization, achieving consistent excellence is a tall order. When the organization consists of 33,000 people scattered across the world, it is a major task indeed.

 

The vision for exemplary QHSE practice is supported by a global QHSE Network and sustained by defined objectives and Key Performance Indicators. It is based on long-established principles and values within Bureau Veritas.

 

Partly the process involves clients. In fact Bureau Veritas has recently invited clients to submit praise where appropriate but also to complain if they are not satisfied. Concludes Yves-Arnaud Peres: 'By actively promoting this open door policy, and truly listening, we can serve our customers better.'
